    Hi David, what an impressive video ... as of today, I'm starting on Davinci and still confused on first step; I'm importing iPhone HDR videos on both ipad & desktop versions to work with them on SDR screens and even tho there a lot of videos, I saw 2 methods: 1.- Project options > Color Management > Color science: Davinci YRGB Color Managed, Automatic color management (ticked), Color processing mode: SDR, Output color space SDR Rec.709 2.- Add to each clip or timeline a "Color Space Transform" via node with settings: Input Color Space: Rec.2020 ; Input Gamma: Rec.2100 HLG (normal or scene) ; Output color space: Rec.709 ; Output gamma: 2.4 or Rec.709 (people from others videos doesn't seems to agree) Do you know which settings or method will be the most correct one ? Thanks beforehand, love your content !

    • @DavidSkok1
      @DavidSkok1 Месяц назад

      Hi - it turns out that both of these methods accomplish the same thing. However you were missing one important step in Option 1: which is that you need to right click on of all your incoming iPhone clips, and from that pop-up menu, select "Input Color Space" then from the sub menus: "Rec.2100", then "Rec.2100 HLG" to tell Resolve what color space your clips were recorded in. As a quick explanation of what is going on here, there are three color spaces you need to be aware of: a. The input color space which is the color space you shot your clips in (Rec.2100 HLG on the newer iPhones) b. The working color space in Resolve (which can be set to many different things, but the best space is "Davinci Wide Gamut" as it can display a huge range of colors and contrasts). c, The output color space, which in your case, it sounds like you want SDR, which is typically Rec.709 Gamma 2.4. (On a Mac, I prefer to use Rec.709a as this is the same as Rec,709 Gamma 2.4, but will display without a gamma shift in QuickTime.) To make this process work, you need two conversions: (i). Before editing and color grading, you will need to convert your input color space to your working color space (ii). After editing and color grading, you will need to convert your working color space to your What is going on in Option 1 that you describe is that Resolve is doing the color space transform steps for you automatically. You simply have to tell it, for each incoming clip, what that clip's color space is. And for each Timeline you need to tell it what is your output color space. What is going on In Option 2, is that you are having to do both of the conversions (i) and (ii) yourself using Color Space Transform nodes. I find that this is more work, and I have not been able to see any difference in quality using either approach. So it's your choice, but I prefer Option 1, but don't forget to select all your iPhone clips, and right click them to set the incoming color space. The advantage to Option 1, is that if you decide to output the timeline in a different color space, you can do it simply by changing the output color space in the Project or Timeline Color Space settings.

      Yes - you will be able to use DaVinci Resolve 18.x on your iMac 2014. However you won't be able to see HDR on that screen as it is not an HDR capable display. So HDR and Dolby Vision while possible, are not going to be practical as you won't be able to see what your output will look like.

  • @JanosKoranyi

    I have to say, that in this video 90% of the the turns are not carving turns. You carve the snow only after you have pivoted your skis first, during the traverse. A carving turn must have at least an apex with carving skis at the point where the skis turn fastest. If you pivot your skis too much there will be no apex. So the start of these turns are not good enough and the pivoting saves the turns. What you need is a much earlier active ankle edging of the skis, but the edgings must be prepared... The best way of preparation is to pull back the new inside ski (valley-side ski during a traverse) forcefully, so that the ski-tip gets pressed to the snow and now you can edge it by your ankle (supination). Then you edge also the new outside ski by your ankle (pronation).

      You can upload HDR videos to RUclips in either HLG format or HLG with Dolby Vision. However, be aware that anyone not using a true HDR display will see a very low contrast version of the video, which you might not like. So if you are going to do that, I recommend doing a test, and watching the video on a non-HDR screen to see how it looks, as that is how a very large subset of your audience will see it.

    Great explanation! I have a quick question: I tried the exact settings (though my footage is SDR, but my timeline is HDR and I've played with the SDR footage in HDR timeline for a "shiny" look), things look great in DaVinci (M1 MacBook Pro with XDR display) though when I export H.265 the colors are washed out. The video IS HDR for sure, but looks like it has wrong gamma/tone mapping. What might I be doing wrong? I've tried various settings as the original settings in your video didn't get what I wanted but no avail. Whatever I do, the exported output has much less contrast than what I see in Resolve. I'm on 18.1.4.

      Hi Can, what device and application are you viewing your exported video file in? Can please try viewing in QuickTime on your MacBook Pro with XDR screen and tell me if the problem still persists. Also please see my comment that I added when Resolve 18 came out on how to add Dolby Vision in the Resolve Export page. If that doesn’t work, I will try other steps with you to fix it.

    Методика такого катания далеко не новая. Основы её были разработаны в 1973 году с большим количеством подводящих упражнений.

    You're the man!!!!! Simple and what I needed! I knew you didn't have to adjust curves to get the colors back off the iPhone. I just had to figure out the Color Management page and thanks to you you figured it out for me! And then you covered Slog footage and made that so simple, omg you're GOATED in my eyes! Thank you sir~! A like and a sub is the least I can do

      Delighted to be of help! Make sure you’ve read the update comment that explains how to export Dolby Vision directly from DaVinci Resolve without using Apple’s Compressor

    Yet in 2023 RUclips doesn’t support Dolby Vision.

      True, but the great news is that it does support HDR, and HDR provides at least 90% of the visual impact.

      Probably not easy to find. We had a guide from the Park that knew how to get there.
